So I have all these photos from all of these fun things from the past couple of weeks and I don’t want them to just live in a file on my computer. So I’m going to roll them out on the blog even though it all feels so old at this point. But it’s also fun to re-live part of My Fascinating Life by spending an hour writing a blog post about it.
The Saturday before Thanksgiving I participated in The Urban Bike Adventure in downtown St. Pete.
Back in February I did The Urban Bike Adventure in downtown Tampa with my friends Michelle and Nicole and we did pretty well. We finished fifth out of 30 teams. This time we reunited along with my frequent team mate Nikki to give Team Wonder Wheels another go.
We were excited to be doing TUBA in our own city this time. Lots of my other friends also formed teams and we all met at Ferg’s on Central which was our starting point.
(My IRunMommies friend Anna, Carlise, Kimi and Michelle)
(My friend Charlotte and her Three Amigos team…one of the clues was to get a team photo with a person with a mustache, so this was convenient.)
The Oompa Loompas went all out with their team costume.
In all there were only seven teams for this race. The organizer went over the rules…
handed out the clues, and said, “Begin!”
I didn’t take a photo of each clue this time, but we somehow thought we needed to go to the historic YMCA so we headed that way.
We were supposed to dance like Beyoncé so we all “put a ring on it”.
Turns out we were supposed to go to the St. Pete Women’s Club and we totally screwed up right off the bat. I think it was my fault, but Michelle thinks it’s her fault. Whatever. More on this later.
Next we headed towards Al Lang Stadium and the Saturday Morning Market.
At Al Lang we had to record a video of us singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”. I used Instagram to record the video and can’t figure out how to embed it, but if you care you can click the photo or the Instagram link:
We also used this opportunity to get a photo of one of our team members getting a piggy back ride from a stranger.
His girlfriend/wife looks thrilled, huh?
One of our clues required that we get a team photo with cheese or a dairy product, so we found some at the Saturday Morning Market.
We took advantage of the crowds to ask some strangers to pose like the Heisman Trophy for us.
Next we headed towards the Museum of Fine Arts.
At the MFA we had to do a team American Gothic pose.
After this we biked down Beach Drive until we hit Coffee Pot Bayou. We inadvertently biked right past the St. Pete Women’s Club, but did not stop and get a team photo. I did get some of us in a photo with it, though…
Unfortunately, I am not in the photo, so it is not the whole team, although you can see bits of all three of my other team mates. But, in our haste we misread a clue and instead of “No Men Allowed” I jumped to “Men’s Club…YMCA!!!” Doh. But this photo is ironic. As you can see, we could have stopped and taken a photo and it would not have affected our overall time (since we would not have stopped at the YMCA in the alternative). But we didn’t. Sadness.
It was fun to be biking on Coffee Pot Bayou again since it has been a while.
We snapped a team photo in Coffee Pot Park and made our first sighting of another team here.
We only had a few clues left! This TUBA was much easier than the Tampa one. I’m pretty sure there were less clues and there were none of the physical challenges like we had to do in Tampa.
Next we headed up towards 9th St., which is all up hill from the water (or what we consider hills in Florida)!
At 9th Street we passed the Three Amigos going in the opposite direction.
Apparently they worked their way through the clues in the opposite direction from us.
Our next stop was the Taoist Tai Chi Society where we had to do a Daniel Russo (Karate Kid) crane pose.
And our final clue was St. Paul’s Catholic Church in the Euclid neighborhood.
I have to admit that my legs (and lungs) were beat by this point, and it really hadn’t been that big of a ride. The uphill part getting up to 9th Street was a challenge for me! All of these other ladies are amazing athletes, so I feel very privileged that they would be on a team with me. (Congrats to Nicole for her recent first Half Marathon at the Women’s Running Half, and to Michelle for her recent first full Marathon at Spacecoast!)
We were all done with the clues at this point so we headed back to Ferg’s via 16th Street.
We were the first team in with a time of 1:19, and my Garmin showed that we had biked a little under 8 miles total. So, not a huge ride, but enough for my out-of-shape body.
Of course we learned that we had screwed up a clue at this point and thus were given a 30 minute penalty. We were pretty sure that we couldn’t all four make it back to the Women’s Club, get a picture, and get back to Ferg’s within 30 minutes so it was not worth trying. We just hung out and waited for the other teams to come in. The next team didn’t come in until after 1:30. So if we had not screwed up a clue we would have won by over 10 minutes. Sadness.
As it was, even with the 30 minute penalty, we still came in 3rd out of 7 teams. My friend Charlotte’s team got side-lined by a flat tire. But we all had fun, so it’s all good.
IRunMommies and Oompa Loompas:
All of the participating teams:
Thanks to my awesome teammates Nikki, Nicole, and Michelle and to The Urban Bike Adventure for a fun afternoon. I see they are coming back to Tampa in February. Who’s in?
