Mid November catch up

November 18, 2013 at 3:35 pm

I pretty much let Yelp take over my blog for a while there, but regular life was also happening in between all of those fabulous events. I was dumping all of those non-Yelping photos into a file as the days went by and this morning there were over 250 photos in there. Here are some of them (stuff that happened in the last two weeks):

Lots of walking to school.

Mack is such a trooper for posing for these silly pictures on our walk every morning.

Lots of other school stuff happened, like volunteering the past two Mondays and today.

and it was also a spaghetti dinner.

Mack participated in a multi-school gifted competition called the Creativity Olympics, held at Perkins Elementary.

His team didn’t score in the top three, but he talked about it for hours afterwards and kept saying how much fun it was.

He got the coveted “Participant” ribbon.

Gearing up for The Urban Bike Adventure with Team Wonder Wheels in downtown St. Pete this weekend (yikes):

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-132

Ugh. Ok. Enough with the horrid selfies. What else?

I noticed on my various shopping trips the past couple of weeks that it is obviously full-on holiday time. I love it.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-79

I don’t love this so much:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-129

Why?

I was excited to stop by a new to me fish store a week or so ago.

There were about a dozen people loitering around outside both of the entrances, but sadly, despite the next photo, they were not open.

Some lady was pretty upset because she was supposed to pick up her crab. I hope she got it.

I went back to the doctor.

More on that in another post most likely.

Chewie, the boys, and I went to Largo Central Park one Sunday.

They have the Christmas lights up! We love coming here to see all the lights during the holidays.

I have been missing my friends at the Trek Store since I haven’t ridden my bike very much in the past six months. But next weekend is The Urban Bike Adventure (yikes again), so I took this opportunity to take Star the Trek in for a tune up.

I was happy to see my friends Meghan and Tori there!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-145

You can barely tell in the photo above, but I wore my shirt from the Southeastern Guide Dogs Walkathon last March because Southeastern Guide Dogs was also there and gave us a great presentation.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-147

I won a giveaway!

A set of tire levers…thanks Trek Store of St. Pete!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-149

Thank you to Anne and her team for another fun event!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-151

And thanks for the tune-up for Star…

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-171

and her new sticker which was hard to photograph.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-172

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-173

On Saturday we went out to the beach to have some family Christmas card portraits made.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-239

And Sunday we rested.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-240

Or at least some of us did.

So now I’m a little more caught up, but that was not 250 photos, so more to come.

Healthy treats that kids hate and Trick or Treating

November 1, 2013 at 4:34 pm

Yesterday I went to Mack’s school for his class’ Halloween Party. Mack was dressed as a dog because he did a book report on a book about a dog earlier in the day, so I dressed like a cat so we’d have a theme.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-9

Halloween is one of the two times a year that they are allowed to have sweets for parties at school (I think the other one is Valentine’s Day). I figured that most of the other donated snacks would be sugary or chip/cracker types of things so I was determined to make something healthy.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-1

I thought of the idea of making individual hummus/veggie cups and tricking them out in a spooky way.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-3

Actually the whole idea came from trying to figure out something to do with spooky fingers. They just seem snacky to me. I kept the veggies long and fingery.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-4

I thought about using peanut butter or almond butter instead of hummus, but there is a nut allergy in their class, so that was out.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-5

Finally I creepified each cup with two spooky fingers, two spooky spiders, and one spooky eyeball.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-6

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-7

Probably 90% of that went into the garbage at school. Some said, “I don’t want one,” and others just sort of sniffed at the hummus and looked at it as if it were ectoplasmic slime. Some nibbled on the un-dipped ends of the veggies. One kid (other than mine) actually tried hummus for the first time and liked it. Win! Most didn’t even try it or eat any of the veggies. Fail!  It’s a little disheartening that I went to the trouble and most of it went into the garbage, but I don’t regret making them. At least somebody gave them a vegetable for once in their life.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-8

And Mack liked it, so that’s the most important thing. He appreciated not only a snack that he likes but the fact that I cared enough to make something healthy. The kids did seem to like the toys (after wiping the hummus off the eyeball).

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-10

Later we had a bunch of friends over for pizza before heading out to trick or treat.

Some neighborhood kids joined us also and we all set out in search of candy.

It was swelteringly hot last night, as it always is here on Halloween. All of the kids were soaked with sweat and thirsty pretty early, so we headed back home. Don’t worry…they all got plenty of candy.

Chad stayed at home and handed out candy, but we got less than a dozen trick-or-treaters at our house (not counting our own entourage).

Halloween’s over. Time to take down the decorations.

This morning Chewie and I walked Mack to school.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-77

Mack was super tired this morning. I think he had a sugar hangover.

I spent the day at home mostly doing laundry and removing some of the Halloween decorations. I also prepped dinner. I’m making Chicken Nanking from Melissa Joulwan’s Well Fed 2 cookbook.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-78

I also need to do something with this assortment of seeds:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-2

Left to right is delicata squash seeds, spaghetti squash seeds, and then pumpkin seeds.

Now I need to go cook dinner and get ready to go out. My friend Ali and I are going to the Brocante Market preview tonight. The monthly market opens in the morning at 9…see you there! Or just…
