Mid November catch up

November 18, 2013 at 3:35 pm

I pretty much let Yelp take over my blog for a while there, but regular life was also happening in between all of those fabulous events. I was dumping all of those non-Yelping photos into a file as the days went by and this morning there were over 250 photos in there. Here are some of them (stuff that happened in the last two weeks):

Lots of walking to school.

Mack is such a trooper for posing for these silly pictures on our walk every morning.

Lots of other school stuff happened, like volunteering the past two Mondays and today.

Cal’s school had a mandatory PTSA meeting (like PTA with an S, and they are all mandatory) one night…

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-67

and it was also a spaghetti dinner.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-68

Mack participated in a multi-school gifted competition called the Creativity Olympics, held at Perkins Elementary.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-204

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-224

His team didn’t score in the top three, but he talked about it for hours afterwards and kept saying how much fun it was.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-225

He got the coveted “Participant” ribbon.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-238

Mack got to see a bunch of his friends from his old elementary school, and I did too.

Gearing up for The Urban Bike Adventure with Team Wonder Wheels in downtown St. Pete this weekend (yikes):

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-132

Ugh. Ok. Enough with the horrid selfies. What else?

I noticed on my various shopping trips the past couple of weeks that it is obviously full-on holiday time. I love it.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-79

I don’t love this so much:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-129

Why?

I was excited to stop by a new to me fish store a week or so ago.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-201

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-202

There were about a dozen people loitering around outside both of the entrances, but sadly, despite the next photo, they were not open.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-203

Some lady was pretty upset because she was supposed to pick up her crab. I hope she got it.

I went back to the doctor.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-78

More on that in another post most likely.

Chewie, the boys, and I went to Largo Central Park one Sunday.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-191

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-192

They have the Christmas lights up! We love coming here to see all the lights during the holidays.

I have been missing my friends at the Trek Store since I haven’t ridden my bike very much in the past six months. But next weekend is The Urban Bike Adventure (yikes again), so I took this opportunity to take Star the Trek in for a tune up.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-138

They had some good food…

giveaways…

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-140

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-143

and a speaker from Trek Women as well as a lady who spoke to us about commuting by bike.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-144

I was happy to see my friends Meghan and Tori there!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-145

You can barely tell in the photo above, but I wore my shirt from the Southeastern Guide Dogs Walkathon last March because Southeastern Guide Dogs was also there and gave us a great presentation.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-146

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-150

Duke pretty much stole the show.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-147

I won a giveaway!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-148

A set of tire levers…thanks Trek Store of St. Pete!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-149

Thank you to Anne and her team for another fun event!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-151

And thanks for the tune-up for Star…

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-171

and her new sticker which was hard to photograph.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-172

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-173

On Saturday we went out to the beach to have some family Christmas card portraits made.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-239

And Sunday we rested.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-240

Or at least some of us did.

So now I’m a little more caught up, but that was not 250 photos, so more to come.

Cya.

November Brocante Vintage Market

November 3, 2013 at 11:01 am

Friday night Ali and I went to the preview for the fourth Brocante Vintage Market.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-4

I am a huge fan of Paper Street Market and this multi-vendor (over 30 brocanteurs) monthly market is their baby. I have been to every Brocante Market so far.

Brocante Vintage Market August 2013
Brocante Vintage Market September 2013
Brocante Vintage Market October 2013

They have one more market this year (the first weekend in December), so if you can’t make it out there today by 5 p.m., then you still have a chance to shop this well-curated market for awesome vintage holiday gifts! The 2014 dates have all been set as well.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-6

The preview on the Friday night before every market is by invitation only, and if you would like to attend I would suggest sending a message via the Brocante Market Facebook page and letting them know. You can’t purchase anything at the preview, but you get to scope everything out so that you can go directly to your favorite items when the market opens. I have been able to get all of the items I wanted after going to the preview. It’s worth it!

They have food (mostly homemade by the brocanteurs) and drinks at the preview party…

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-33

and this month they had live music (the guy with no sleeves is named Johnny…that’s all I got about the band).

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-23

Here are some items that caught my eye this month:

I loved this little bicycle ($12) and the “Beware of Dog” sign ($7):

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-5

I am on the hunt for another coat rack, and I liked the pale blue/green paint on this one ($79):

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-7

Initially I liked this little shelf ($15..I would have painted it):

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-8

but upon closer inspection I decided it was too junky for $15.

Wooden 2-tiered tray…they called this a “jewelry tray” ($15):

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-9

Very large metal tray $10:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-10

Retro oil and vinegar cruets $6:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-11

Ali and I also loved these little French paintings, but at $50 for the pair they were out of our price range:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-12

Daisy tray $12:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-13

Mirror photo op:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-14

Teak serving tray (this thing is like two feet long) $18:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-17

Last month I saw this table at Brocante for $240, and I was sure that it was the same dining table as our own dining table:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-88

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-89

I didn’t get a better picture of it, and Celesta of Paper Street Market thinks it was an actual mid-century piece, but I still think it is the same table as ours (a 17 year old table from Scan Design). Here’s ours (without the leaves extended):

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-88

This month a different brocanteur had the table! This time I inspected it more thoroughly and this one was definitely the same as ours:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-18

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-19

This one was $299, but included the chairs which were great. Obviously this was a mass-produced table and is now common on the secondary market. I have also seen the table at two different thrift/vintage stores. Nice to know we could sell it for a good price if we ever get around to finding a round dining table for our round dining room. But honestly, after living here for six months I’ve kind of grown to like how the rectangular table looks in the round room. It’s a nice table anyway.

Back to items at the market. I loved this aqua plant stand and remember seeing it at the market previously:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-20

But, I think it was priced at about double of what I would have been willing to pay:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-21

I liked this little table top stand for $12. I thought it would be great for creating height on tablescapes or as a display stand.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-50

They still had this octagonal stop sign mirror that I thought would be so great in a boys’ room as a dresser mirror (didn’t notice the price):

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-22

There was no shortage of mirrors.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-24

I liked this long mirrored tray for $16:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-31

This is Ali enjoying the big fans they had set up in the back room:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-30

Chad may kill me, but I really liked this 3-dimensional needlepoint cardinal ($24):

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-26

I thought it would be so great as part of a holiday vignette. When I look at something like this I feel like I can see a woman spending hours with needle and thread at a labor of love.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-27

And as a possible gift for a cat lady in my life, I thought this vintage cat needlepoint was charming. It was $36, but was really large and framed under glass:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-28

I am really drawn to vintage needlepoint and vintage paint-by-numbers.

I liked this apothecary jar filled with old glass ornaments $20):

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-29

Here is a clock similar to the one that my (now) jewelry hanger must have come from:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-32

(mine):

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-99

If I had an eat-in kitchen in a mid-century or earlier home, I would LOVE to have this Formica dining table for $149.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-34

It was in amazing condition. I couldn’t find a flaw on it. I think it was 47 inches diameter.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-36

I thought this old beat up brass foot locker was awesome, but I knew Chad would classify it as total junk so I didn’t look at the price:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-46

Sean (one of the owners of Paper Street Market) gave Ali and me a tour of the back of the warehouse. In December the market is going to be expanded into this area.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-25

Even more vintage treasures to be had next month!

Yesterday morning I headed back to the market bright and early. Or rainy and early.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-38

It was pouring, so I sat in my car for a few minutes…

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-39

as a line of people with umbrellas began to form in front of the entrance. Brocante is so awesome that people are willing to stand in a line in the rain to get in early!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-40

Eventually we joined them.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-41

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-42

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-43

The market was hopping within minutes of the door opening.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-52

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-45

I didn’t notice when I snapped that last picture, but my friend Cari was in that crowd.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-54

When they opened the doors I quickly gathered all of the things I had picked out the night before (not everything shown above, but all of the things I had decided were a good buy):

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-53

and then continued to check out the market with Molly and Ali. Molly found this adorable vintage sleeping jacket (night coat?) for $10:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-44

I snapped photos of these frames strung with hemp as inspiration for something to do with an empty metal frame that I have:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-15

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-47

I like this idea much better than chicken wire.

The preview Friday night was great…thanks for the invitation Celesta and Sean!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-37

It was another great month at Brocante Vintage Market. The market is still open today until 5 p.m. and they restock with new items over night, so I’m sure there is still lots of goodness to be had.

Cya next month at Brocante!
