Ratty braid Saturday

January 28, 2012 at 3:22 pm

I was up super early again this morning for a 12 mile run. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon is two weeks from tomorrow, and my plan is 12 miles today and 12 miles next Saturday, with walking breaks every mile and a half (to mimic where I will walk through the water stops). Today I planned to walk .25 miles at the following mileage points:

I write these on my hand so that I won’t have to do mental math while running, but it was a big fail this morning when I realized that I had done the written math wrong. This is what it should have looked like:

So I ended up having to do mental math anyway, which sucked. Also, by mile 10.25 there was no way I was going to be able to run the last 1.5 miles (after walking until 10.5) with no walking, so after mile eleven I also took two very brief walking breaks. Whatever.

It was perfect running weather this morning…clear skies, low humidity and around 60 degrees. This was my first stop, at the St. Raphael’s bridge.

I decided today would be a dress rehearsal for the R ‘n’ R, so I wore my uniform (except for the Women’s Half visor). Next stop at the Coffee Pot Bayou bridge.

I did stop just a few minutes later for a couple of seconds to snap this:

How could I not?

True sunrise close to mile 5:

Even at the early hour there were people roaming around in pirate regalia. Today is Gasparilla! It’s a huge celebration of a legendary pirate invasion and is a major holiday in Tampa Bay. There was a breakfast cruise ship with a gang plank out to the sea wall in the Vinoy Marina…a very odd sight.

This is at my half-way mark, mile 6 on The Pier.

I went on about 3/4 of a mile down to the Mahaffey and turned around so I wouldn’t have to run The Pier twice.

I was doing pretty well up until about mile 9 and then it started feeling really tough. With all my walking breaks I ended up with close to a 13 min./mile pace. (Stats on my “Still Running” page) I’m fine with that. Hopefully with my long run next weekend and the excitement of race day I will be able to at least come close to my first half marathon pace of 12:40. But I really don’t care about that very much. My goal with running is to get exercise, enjoy it, and keep doing it. Speed really doesn’t come into it.

I passed two IRunMommies on my run (hey Rasa and Tanya!), and attempted to get a photo of Tanya and me, but my camera had gotten shifted in my running belt to video mode, so all I got was a three second video of the ground, my shirt, and me saying, “Go girl!”. Oh well. It was great to see both of them. I saw them both at about the same spot, one near the beginning of my run on my way out, and the other near the end of my run on my way back in. So motivating both times. Many other IRunMommies were out there pounding it out, but our paths didn’t cross this morning.

When I got home I had a huge bowl of Peanut Butter Cheerios.

Have you tried them yet? Of course they were awesome. How could they not be?

After I ate breakfast I headed to the gym for Bodyflow.

It felt good to stretch everything out, but I had no standing strength and I also kept getting charlie horses in my feet, calves, thighs, ham strings…pretty much everywhere. I contemplated an ice bath afterwards, but decided I just didn’t have the fortitude for it this morning. My joints feel great. It’s just my muscles that are fully depleted today.

This is how ratty my braid looks after 12 miles and Bodyflow:

It started out tight and neat. Imagine how ratty a ponytail would be.

Chad had planned to take the boys to Gasparilla today, but then Mack got invited to a playdate at Chuck E. Cheese’s for this afternoon and the boys didn’t seem to really care about it, so they just ended up running some errands this morning. Chad and Cal are watching Matrix Reloaded while Mack is off with his friends. Fairly explicit sex scenes in that movie. Just heard, “Awwww!” from the other room (more like “ewwww”) in response to one.

I’m doing laundry and making Warm Broccoli Cheese Dip for a Secret Society meeting tonight!

I had to miss the clandestine meetings in November and December, so I am really excited about tonight’s festivities. That link back there is to my post about the first meeting I was asked to attend, but there have been many awesome gatherings, so if you want to see more of what I’m talking about, click on the tiny “Secret Society” tag over in the tag cloud in my side bar. I promise they are all fascinating.

Happy Gasparilla everyone!
