Rock of Ages and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse

I had a fun but exhausting weekend and while I had so much I wanted to blog about yesterday, I ended up crashing and taking a two hour nap in the afternoon. I guess I needed it. I can’t actually remember the last time I took a nap. I feel much better today, but I’m taking it easy and spending the day doing laundry and hanging out at home with Chad, who has the day off for Columbus Day. It’s one of those weird holidays where he has the day off, but the kids are in school. Kind of nice to get to spend a day at home together with no kids.

Saturday night we got a babysitter and headed out for an awesome double date night. We were going to Ruth Eckerd Hall to see Rock of Ages with some of our best friends.

Of course as soon as we got there I checked in on Yelp and now I’m a regular at Ruth Eckerd Hall. I guess that my visit to Ruth Eckerd to see Bill Maher with my friend Christine a few weeks ago was the first time I had checked in there.

Too bad I didn’t know about Yelp when I went to Ruth Eckerd for over a dozen children’s performances over the years. Our friends, the C’s, arrived about the same time we did and the men stood in line for drinks…

while the other Caroline and I went to the snack bar to get our FREE snack bar item which was a Yelp check-in special. As I have said numerous times, you should be Yelping!

We found our seats with just a few minutes to spare before the show started.

The show was fantastic.

I graduated from high school in 1987 and this was definitely the soundtrack of my youth.

Even though I hadn’t heard some of these songs in almost 30 years, I still knew every word to most of them.

Several times Chad kissed me to make me stop singing at the top of my lungs.

The story line was really good too and didn’t feel forced to match the play list. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute.

I highly recommend the Rock of Ages stage show, especially if you are in your 40’s! Now we have plans to get together with the C’s and our kids and watch the movie version.

After the show we drove across the Courtney Campbell bridge to Tampa to have dinner at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar. A friend recently recommended this restaurant to me, it is highly rated on Yelp, and I just received a $50 gift card in the mail for them so I thought it was the perfect choice for our double date night.

Fleming’s has a large menu…

but they are especially well-known for their steaks and amazing side dishes.

We started with drinks, of course. I stuck to water after having two glasses of red wine at Ruth Eckerd. The other Caroline ordered a chocolate martini…

and she twisted my arm until I tried a sip. It was delicious.

They also brought bread with two different herbed butters to the table.

For my dinner I started with the wedge salad. I like to try wedge salads at restaurants, because I really love blue cheese.

This salad was good, but didn’t blow me away. The best wedge salad I have tried so far was definitely the one I had a while ago at Three Birds Tavern. I think their addition of bacon just took it over the top. I probably should have just skipped the salad anyway, since my entrée included a small salad on the side.

For my entrée I chose one of Fleming’s small plate options…the filet mignon skewers.

I also ordered the Fleming’s potatoes as a side dish, as they were one of the sides often raved about on Yelp.

I thought the skewers (especially the gorgonzola bacon fondue) and the potatoes were awesome. Chad said he thought the potatoes seemed slightly undercooked, but I didn’t think so. He ordered the filet medallions served over risotto…

and the chipotle cheddar mac and cheese (another highly touted side dish).

He said he enjoyed his entrée, but honestly was not blown away considering the high-end prices. I tasted the mac and cheese, and also tried the C’s roasted mushroom side dish…

and thought both were delicious. I guess Chad is more picky than I am. Fleming’s has happy hour specials and I definitely think I’d go back there to try some of their dishes at more affordable prices.

I had a great time at both the show and at dinner and of course the best part was hanging out with our friends. Love you guys!

More weekend fun and food coming up. It was definitely an indulgent food weekend. I need to lock down some clean eating this week for sure.
