The Glow Run 5K Recap

January 13, 2013 at 4:07 pm

Last night we packed up a picnic dinner and headed downtown for The Glow Run 5K. We set up in Pioneer Park right next to Al Lang Stadium and ate chicken wings that Chad had prepared.

After getting all of our glow on (about 100 glow sticks, I think), we headed over towards The Dali Museum and the starting line.

There were tons of people down there and everyone seemed to be having a good time.

We jumped in not too far behind the starting line and found my friends Charlotte and Ali who were also there with their friends and families.

I also saw my friend Jenny and several other people we knew. I love this community!

As we were walking to the start we heard some young woman remark, “This is the kind of event you get a babysitter for.” Whatever clueless 20-something. I’m sure everyone will be much appreciative if she always leaves HER kids at home. As for us, we love doing these events as a family.

As the sky darkened the crazy glowing crowd looked amazing.

I am so appreciative of my husband and boys who are happy and willing to do these events with me.

Gangnam style.

And we’re off!

Some people were amazingly creative or just extremely enthusiastic with the glow sticks.

They had a few black light zones along the course, but I wish there had been more. The black light zones were kind of lame.

We walked all through the USF St. Pete campus.

The boys turned it into a 5K obstacle course.

Almost back to the finish line…

I think we did the 5K in around 50 minutes according to Chad’s calculations. I should have worn my Garmin but I forgot. He walked and the boys and I walk/ran to keep up with him.

We got our medals!

The medals were really cool.

They glow in the dark!

The after-party was just okay. They had a DJ and a beer tent, but the line was extremely long and Chad decided it wasn’t worth it. I thought that the after-party would have lots of black light, but that didn’t seem to be the case. We didn’t stay too long.

The obstacle course continued on our walk back to the car.

On the ride home we de-glowed ourselves.

Once home Cal and Mack constructed a glow-stick rope.

There was a moment when we were cracking all the glow sticks that Cal got glow juice in his eye and freaked out. Chad rinsed it out with water and he was fine, but apparently that stuff really stings! The experience didn’t turn him off of glow sticks forever, though.

I guess our garbage can was glowing all night.

We had a great time and really enjoyed the event. We already have a couple more races on the calendar that we are doing as a family. Can’t wait!

p.s. I’m sure it’s way to early to credit the Whole30, but I had no hip pain last night and today my hip feels great as well. The last time I walk/ran just two miles I was limping around in pain all the next day. I’m hopeful!
