My Whole30 Recap … 30 Days, 90 meals

I did it!

I managed to do the entire 30 days with no snacking and nothing other than my three compliant meals a day. The only slips that I’m aware of were accidents and they were all very small: licking my fingers after giving the boys Teriyaki wings, eating a piece of sashimi that I didn’t realize had soy sauce on it, and eating a baby corn from a friends salad. That’s it as far as I know.

I’m going to have say that I think the Whole30 has been a huge success for me. The main reason that I decided to try it was for my hip. I wanted to see if I could reduce systemic inflammation in my body, thus helping the chronic IT band tendonitis I have suffered in my hip for almost a year despite seeing orthopedists, taking oral and injectable steroids, and doing six weeks of physical therapy.

A couple of months ago, after an extended period of no running, I decided to try to run again. My hip felt fine and I thought maybe since I had taken so long off that I could try again. On that evening, before I even ran a quarter of a mile, I felt the familiar pain in my hip beginning. I decided to push on through and did a run/walk of two miles. The next day my hip was extremely painful and I could not walk without a severe limp. Obviously my hip was not any better at all, despite the long time off.

About halfway through my Whole30 I decided to try running a little again. I did two mile run/walks several times without hip pain during or after the run. This was already a significant improvement than the last time I tried to run and nothing else had changed in my life other than starting the Whole30. Weekend before last I did a six mile run/walk without pain and last weekend I did eight miles, also without pain other than the normal tightness/soreness than accompanies increasing mileage. I can’t say for sure that the Whole30 is responsible for this, but I believe it is. I am a Whole30 convert! I really think it has helped my hip issues. I’m still building mileage hoping to be able to complete the Sarasota Half Marathon on St. Patrick’s Day, but I am very encouraged and hopeful now. At the beginning of the last year I really thought that there might never be another half marathon in my future.

Other benefits that I have noticed during my Whole30:

My skin has cleared up. I am saving so much time not having to Photoshop out zits for the blog! I have never had terrible acne, but I do get breakouts on my forehead and chin. I usually am dealing with at least a couple of blemishes. But not right now! Also, my skin feels moisturized although I don’t wear makeup generally and I also don’t regularly use a moisturizer (I know, bad me).

Increased energy. I am not dragging out of bed in the morning, despite the fact that normally my alarm goes off at 5:30 a.m. I have no afternoon energy slump. My activity levels have increased steadily since starting the Whole30 after my little holiday exercise hiatus, and I have never lacked for stamina during a workout.

General feeling of well-being. That’s an understatement. The past week or so I have almost felt euphoric most of the time. Seriously, I’ve been stupid happy lately.

No symptoms whatsoever during “that time of the month”. No cramps or bloating or other annoying side-effects that I normally have. If you are bothered by me talking about “that time of the month” then I think you should leave now and never return to this blog again.

Weight Loss. Drumroll…I lost 9.2 pounds! I’m psyched about that. That’s almost 1/3 of what I want to lose to get back to my “goal” weight of 170#. I’m having blood drawn later this week and have a doctor’s appointment next week, so I’m interested to see what my numbers will be.

That’s what my pedicures look like six months later. I love this Quantum scale that I got for Christmas. It never shows your actual weight! You program it with your starting weight (which it doesn’t display) and from then on it just shows gains or losses.

Here’s what I ate during my Whole30. I think you can see that I ate plenty of delicious, beautiful food. Not always shown is the three cups of coffee with coconut milk that I had every single day. I also drank a kombucha one evening.

Can you count how many eggs I ate during my Whole30? Me neither, but it was a bunch.

So what’s next?

I plant to do the 10-day reintroduction plan, introducing one type of food individually for a few days each. Then I have a huge girls’ weekend away where I will be reintroducing alcohol. Big time. After that I plan to basically still eat this way at least until the Sarasota Half Marathon. I feel like I have had great success and I don’t want to compromise it. However, I will not be sweating every tiny detail like you must during the Whole30.

You can read my review of It Starts with Food here. I think you should understand why all of these certain foods are restricted on the Whole30, and the book does an amazing job of explaining the reasoning behind all the rules. It’s an easy-to-read book and is very motivating. It will explain why there’s no point in doing the Whole30 half way. Or rather, if you only do it half way, it’s not really a Whole30.
