Burger 21 “Burger Heaven” Community Manager Yelp Event

March 25, 2013 at 2:14 pm

Yesterday afternoon Chad and I left the boys with a babysitter and drove from St. Pete to Westchase in north Tampa for a Community Manager Yelp Event (CMYE) at Burger 21.

I have heard so many people rave about Burger 21 that I was really happy to finally have a chance to check it out. They were voted “Best Burger” in the Best of Yelp survey last year. The “Best of Yelp” awards are voted on by all of us Elites, and it’s definitely a group whose opinion I value (like my own, haha).

We don’t have one in St. Pete, but they have several locations in Tampa and it was great to finally have an excuse to make the trip. As soon as we arrived I saw my friend Carlos of Carlos Eats manning the check-in table.

He directed us to a long table where the Burger 21 staff were setting out hors d’oeuvres.

The Skinny

Chad grabbed a sample of “The Skinny” turkey burger and I got one of the “Black & Bleu” sliders and we found a table on the patio.

Burger 21 had already placed containers of fries and a sampling of all of their sauces on the tables for us Yelpers to try.

We were also immediately presented with samples of the cookies & cream and strawberry milkshakes.

This was a very happy table indeed.

The bacon on the black & bleu burger was thick and so delicious.

I didn’t get much heat from the blackening spice, but the burger was so good. Chad was raving about his turkey burger, so I had to try one of those as well. I think it may have been the best turkey burger I have ever tasted. We also both tried the chicken tenders at one point and they were very good, but I didn’t think they stood out as something special unlike the burgers. Chad later tried one of the cheesy burgers and declared it awesome.

This was a CMYE, not an Elite event. The difference is that Elite events are only open to the Yelp Elite team and generally include everything gratis. CMYE’s are open to all Yelp members, subject to RSVP, and usually include some free food or discounts, but usually not everything is free. In many cases the feel of the events are indistinguishable, as I’ve been to some very swanky and lush CMYE’s. This event menu included several complimentary hors d’oeuvres and discounted beer, wine and menu items.

I am not a beer or wine lover, so Chad got a Woodchuck Hard Cider for me which was great.

The servers at the event were fabulous, giving lots of attention to all the Yelpers who had invaded their patio for the afternoon.

The fries and milkshake samples just kept flowing. I couldn’t resist trying the bananas foster milkshake shot…how else could I review it?

Chad thought this was his favorite of the three milkshakes. I think I liked the cookies & cream the best of the three, but I really want to go back and try the Ybor City Double Espresso or the Chocolate Peanut Butter shakes. I love anything coffee or peanut butter flavored.

There was plenty of food at the event, but since Burger 21 is not close enough to our house to become a frequent destination, we wanted to try something else off the menu. We decided to split the Ahi Tuna burger which was an awesome decision.

The savory sweet combination of the caramel soy, Sriracha, avocado, and pickled cucumber was amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever had fried tuna before either. The sesame roll was great as well. The bread can really make or break a burger, and this one was perfect.

All of the food at the Burger Heaven event was amazing, but my favorite part of these events is getting to hang out with my friends.

There was a Twitter contest all week, and I won the “best tweet” for this event last Tuesday. My friend Jenny won it one day, as did my friend Nichole. As one of the daily winners, I won $10 gift card for Burger 21 and a beer glass etched with their logo. Nichole (of Casa de Crews) was the big winner for the whole week of tweeting and won a free burger every week for the rest of the year! That’s her in the stripes with her hands in the air:

Congratulation Nichole! I’ve already told her that I want to go have a burger with her (on her, of course, haha). All the Twitter contest winners and Brett:

It was my favorite way to spend time…great food and great friends. Yes, I totally blew whatever diet I may have been pretending to be on, but it was so worth it.

I can’t wait to go back with the kids and use my gift card.

Thank you Yelp Tampa Bay and Burger 21 for yet another wonderful event! As I’ve said so many times before, you should be yelping! The only requirement for this event was to have an active Yelp account and to RSVP before space ran out. You could have been here with me!
