Mack is sick

Dinner last night was Trader Joe’s Italian chicken sausage…

roasted golden beets, and broccoli with my homemade ranch dressing.

At 4:00 a.m. this morning Mack woke me up complaining of a very sore throat. It was so bad that he couldn’t sleep. He could barely talk or swallow and he was wheezing. I gave him some nighttime cold medicine and eventually he got back to sleep. I didn’t get back to sleep until about fifteen minutes before my alarm went off. Awesome.

So needless to say, Mack didn’t go to school today. Instead we went to the pediatrician’s office.

He does not have strep throat. Most likely it is RSV or some other virus which you pretty much can’t do anything about. He may be out of commission for a few days. We’ll see. If he feels okay and doesn’t have a fever the doctor said he could go to school. So far no fever, but he doesn’t feel good at all.

After the doctor’s we went to Target to see about getting an inhaler that she prescribed for the wheezing. He doesn’t need the inhaler now, but if his breathing gets difficult he will need it. She said if it is RSV then the symptoms are usually worst on day five! The inhaler is going to be $35 dollars, so I decided to just wait and see if he needs it before getting it filled. At least now they have the prescription on file so I can just call it in if he needs it. Since I was there anyway I decided to go ahead and get a flu shot. $28 (out of pocket…my insurance won’t pay for a flu shot unless I go to my primary care doctor to get it and I’m never going there again, so…), but the pharmacy tech found me a $5 coupon so it was only $23. Mack took these:

You can’t really see my shorts too well in those photos, but in August they were so tight that I would not wear them. Now they are loose and comfy. Yay whole30!

I got Mack a treat at Target since he had to endure two hours of the doctor and then Target while not feeling well.

He said the chocolate would not make him feel better, but it would make him sweeter.

When we got home (now lunch time and I still hadn’t eaten anything today except for coffee with heavy cream), I put dinner in the crockpot. It is crockpot apple pork tenderloin, based on a recipe I found here.

That looks like disgusting sushi.

Also when we got home from Target the landscapers were at our house. They are removing our mystery pond and cleaning up a bunch of other stuff.

I thought I had a “before” picture of the mystery pond, but I can’t find it. It was completely covered with ferns and you could not see it at all.

We lived here for a couple of months before we even realize there was a pond. It was tucked back into this odd corner between the curved wall of our dining room and the pool table room.

The pond had a pump and a light but they were not plugged in. There is an electrical outlet wayyyy back in that corner.

This cute little guy was in there.

Actually, seeing him through the ferns one day is how I realized that there was a pond there.

The landscapers are also removing the lava rock from all of the planting beds in our pool cage. I hate lava rock as mulch. Now that it’s almost fall (in Florida) and hopefully we’ll have some cool days soon, I am planning to do some work out there replanting all of the beds and mulching them with pine bark. I was more than happy to hire out removing the pond and the lava rock…not easy work.

I had planned to start putting up the Halloween decorations today, but Mack’s sickness has totally sidetracked that. I prioritized blogging! I am still challenging myself to publish a blog post every day in October. So far so good. Only 29 more days. Now I must go eat something.
