The house gets Halloweeny

October 3, 2013 at 4:13 pm

Mack is still sick. We have been pretty housebound today. I only ran out to the post office to mail a couple of things. Other than that, I’ve just been doing stuff around the house all day while Mack convalesces (meaning, lays around staring at a computer all day…YouTube and Minecraft, I’m guessing).

Last night the grotesque pork/apple sushi…

turned into deliciousness in the crockpot.

My creation was based on this recipe. The apples kind of cook down to nothing, but the flavor of the pork was excellent. The recipe doesn’t call for salt, but I added a little bit to the raw pork, and when it was done I still thought it needed a little more salt. I love salt.

The boys had couscous and I had a piece of sweet potato.

Breakfast this morning:

That’s homemade sausage and a cheesy egg that I made for Mack but that he didn’t feel like eating. Yay for cheese (in moderation)…NSNG!

For lunch I made a salad with lettuce, spinach, avocado, tomatoes, leftover pork, and homemade ranch dressing.

I finally got all of the Halloween decorations out. We have this very small, very hot and dirty outside storage room.

Most of the things we had in our old storage unit now live in this cramped space that is lined with shelves.

At one point in the house’s history it was the boiler room. Of course now we have central heat and air (thank goodness) and the old furnace/boiler has been removed. The brick in the corner there is the old chimney for the furnace, and there are still holes in the cinderblock where the old ducts were.

Pretty, right? When we have really heavy, prolonged rain some water does seep into here at the floor level. But even with days on end of torrential rains like we had recently, it was only ever enough to barely make the floor wet. My Rubbermaid bins keep everything dry (relatively…nothing in the bins showed any signs of moisture).

There is also quite a bit of tile in there leftover from when they renovated the house around 1990.

The extra tile came in handy when I had the trash compactor removed. The handymen were able to finish off the floor in the “nook” where the compactor used to be and it looks pretty seamless with the existing floor now.

So now the inside of our house is all Halloweeny.

Many of our decorations are from the boys’ preschool days.

This little stand is still a work in progress. I just sort of plunked a few things down there for now, but I’m going to tweak it. I need to get something to go in the tall vase and in the owl.

The things on the other side of the dining room window sill are not Halloweeny…just there all the time.

I need to find a cute pot for my chive plant. It loves that window. I snip off it constantly…I use it to make my homemade ranch dressing (instead of dried chives).

The mantle in the living room got a seasonal update also.

This vase and the grapevine pumpkins are from Tuesday Morning. The dried lavender is from Décor Steals.

The masterpiece painting of the spooky black dress was done by me at Painting with a Twist while on the Chevy Fit4Life Tour. I thought it seemed sort of Halloweenish.

The black raven is from Target. The photos were done by a friend of mine. That bridge is what is known as the “421 Bridge” in my hometown. Me and everybody I know jumped off that bridge into the river below at one point in high school. We were so smart back then.

I started putting the Halloween decorations outside but I’m not finished. That will have to wait for another blog post. Another DAILY blog post. Day 3, so far so good.
