Whole30, Day 14

January 21, 2013 at 5:00 pm

I didn’t sleep in this morning because the boys and I had plans to head out to the St. Pete Beach Classic and spectate my friends running the half marathon. I got up early and made whole wheat oatmeal pancakes (click for recipe) for the boys.

For my breakfast I mixed some fresh spinach in with leftover ground beef (with eggplant, mushrooms, and onions), two eggs, blueberries, and strawberries.

I also had three cups of coffee with coconut milk. I have this every morning but may not always mention it.

After breakfast we headed out to the beach. The new bridge from Tierra Verde into St. Pete Beach is coming along.

That will be fun to bike over.

It was a little overcast, but overall a nice morning for a race.

I was a little worried that we wouldn’t get out there in time to see my friends, but I really didn’t want to get up earlier than 6:00. Luckily we happened to get out there and park just in time to see my friend Ali run by. She had just passed the eight mile marker.

I knew that I had several other friends running who were ahead of Ali, so we walked down the course about half a mile, hoping to see them coming back towards the finish line at the Sirata.

We were successful and saw my friend Mitzi coming in.

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-9

She was closely followed by my friend Kate.

Both Kate and Ali did the St. Pete Beach Classic challenge. The challenge included three races on Saturday, a 5K, a 10K, and a 3.8 mile beach run, and then the half marathon on Sunday. That means they ran a marathon over two days!

Ali was really hurting when we saw her close to eight miles. It was no wonder after having put in 13 miles the day before! She told me she might quit when she got back to the Sirata, but she persevered despite severe calf cramps. While we waited for her to come in, we goofed off on Gulf Boulevard.

I taught the boys the magic of snapdragons.

We hooked up with Ali’s boyfriend Mark and her daughter Ali and the kids played in the parking lot with Cal’s remote control car that he got for Christmas.

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-14

Pretty soon we saw Ali coming in, looking strong.

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-15

Molly was yelling, “Go Mommy! Go Mommy!”

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-16

The kids all ran the last tenth of a mile in with Ali.

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-17

Woohoo Ali! I’m so proud of you!!!! Look at all that BLING!

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-27

While Ali and the grown-ups waited for the awards and got a much-deserved beverage, I took the kids up to Ali’s hotel room to put on their swimsuits.

Let’s all count Mack’s ribs:

I promise he’s not undernourished.

Pool time! We love Florida in January!

Lots of runners were soaking their tired legs in the hot tub.

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-26

Congratulations to Ali, Kate, Mitzi, Erin, and anyone that I might have missed at the race! And thank you Ali for letting us hang out with you at the hotel. We had a great morning.

Once home I ate lunch. I packed this container to take to the Yelp event in Sarasota Saturday night (full recap still to come), but didn’t eat it that night.

That’s the last of the crockpot chicken, sweet potato, pecans, bell pepper, and carrots.

We spent the afternoon hanging around the house. Cal and Chad spent a lot of time over the weekend building this rocket kit that Cal got for Christmas. It uses high air pressure (75 psi) and an electric water-sprinkler valve.

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-29

Cal built the actual rocket out of paper and masking tape.

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-30

The first attempt was kind of a flop. The air pressure was too high for the flimsy paper rocket and it exploded when the valve was released.

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-33

Chad reinforced the rocket with more masking tape…

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-31

and they tried again.

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-34

The results weren’t much better. It exploded again. In the photo on the right above you can see the piece that blew off right above Cal’s face.

Finally, Cal built a whole new rocket out of cardboard and reinforced the whole thing with duct tape.

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-32

This time they had success!

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-35

So much success that the rocket ended up coming down into a neighbor’s fenced backyard across the street. Ah well. It was a fun endeavor.

After the boys got done playing rocket scientist, we got to work on dinner. Chad grilled a flank steak and I made rice for the him and the boys and roasted some asparagus for all of us.

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-36

I got some beautiful new miniature roses today to go with my beautiful asparagus.

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-37

My dinner:

My Facinating Life Caroline Calcote-38

Delicious.

That’s it for day 14. Two weeks down! Tomorrow marks the halfway point in my Whole30. I’m feeling great, my pants are looser, and I feel like I’ve learned a lot already. Onward.

Cya.

Yesterday’s awesomeness in pictures, Part 1

June 16, 2012 at 2:55 pm

Yesterday was my favorite kind of day. A jam-packed day of crazy busy fun stuff. Ahhhh summertime! I took way too many photos and love them all, of course, so I’m going to stretch them into two posts.

Yesterday’s awesomeness, part one:

We had breakfast at home and and then I loaded up the car with all the supplies needed for the gym, the beach, and a swim meet.

To the gym for Bodypump, boys in the Kids’ Club.

We changed into beach clothes and put on sunscreen at the gym.

Next we ran by Publix to get subs and watermelon for lunch at the beach.

20120615-IMG_6147

Head to the beach!

Turn right at the Don Cesar:

Arrive at the Beach House Suites by the Don Cesar.

20120615-IMG_6175

Glom onto friends staycation at a fab beach resort location. Ask if they can get us a parking pass for the day.

20120615-IMG_6153

Discover an elevator with a mirrored ceiling.

20120615-IMG_6154

Hit the beach and take a million photos with three different cameras.

If you got off the boat bike thing it was very hard to get back on unless you were in very shallow water.

20120615-100_0008

20120615-100_0014

I had to get on the thing and join the fun.

I let Cal take my waterproof Kodak easyshare sport camera (that I just got for my birthday and hadn’t used under water yet) up to the pool.

Eventually I decided I better head up to the pool to see if he figured the camera out. Of course, he had figured it out much better than me. The more blue-ish looking photos are on the underwater setting. The green-ish photos are just on the regular setting. I had no idea, but Cal did.

20120615-100_0059

We had a great several hours at the beach, but then had to change into swim team gear and head out to yesterday’s awesomeness, part two.

Stayed tuned for “Yesterday’s awesomeness in pictures, Part 2” coming up soon!
