Holiday craziness and laziness

November 27, 2012 at 6:47 pm

It seems like the days are speeding up and I can’t manage to get even a fraction of what I want to do done every day.

We finally got all of the outside decorations up.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-1

Impressive, right?

Considering that I haven’t been exercising much at all lately, you’d think I’d have plenty of time in the day, but somehow time just slips through my fingers. I have been so lazy lately. We haven’t walked to school in weeks. Of course, there was no school last week, but the week before that and this week…just laziness in not wanting to get up at 5:30 (versus 6:00) and head out into the freezing cold (55 degrees is freezing in Florida) to walk to school. I really need to get back into that routine! Tomorrow! I’m throwing it down on the blog. Tomorrow we will walk to school.

As far as other exercise goes I have just let the universe lead me to laziness, which it is wont to do. Ever since I tendered my notice at the gym I have not wanted to go back there even though technically I could still be going until December 10th or something like that. My muscles have turned to jelly, I think. I had my big 55 mile bike ride and 1500 meter swim in the TriRock Triathlon to keep me working out, but now that those two events are behind me I’ve been a total slacker. I really need to turn this around. I’m going to have to join a new gym. I need the classes and schedules to keep me motivated. I really miss BodyPump.

Feeling down in the dumps about my laziness did prompt me to go on the family evening walk last night.

I took a few pictures of houses with Christmas lights, but there really aren’t too many out yet in my neighborhood.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-3

This is the ritzier end of my neighborhood (not the part we live in).

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-4

I actually prefer the simpler houses because I figure that the richie riches just paid somebody to decorate for them.

Cal talks non-stop for the entire mile and a half walk. Mack makes loops around all of us, playing imaginary adventure games the whole time.

Yay or nay on inflatable yard ornaments? Personally, I say nay, but to each their own.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-10

I just think they look lame laying in the yard uninflated all day.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-11

I wish we had more lights, but I’m not willing to get out the two-story ladder.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-12

Chad and I watched Homeland last night on Tivo. It is so good. I had a beagle blanket.

Breakfast this morning, featuring amazing Parkesdale Farm Market strawberry syrup. I promise that my banana French toast (made with eggbeaters and egg whites) is NOT swimming in it. It just looks that way because it spread out while I was finding my camera.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-13

This morning flew by (where did it go? what did I do?) and then I had lunch with Mack at school. Somehow my busy morning (doing what?) got away from me and I ended up going to school with no makeup and wet hair.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-14

We sat outside in the courtyard for a little while, then went in to Mrs. P’s room to see Prince William…

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-15

and hang stars.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-16

I didn’t volunteer in Mack’s classroom today as his teacher was out and he had a substitute.

Outfit of the (not much) volunteering day:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-17

Fall décor still apparent obviously, but I’m expecting Christmas stuff next week since it will be December.

After I left school I went to drop newspapers off at the recycling center that is nearby…

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-18

then went home for lunch.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-19

I’m sad because I’m already almost out of the pickled Brussels sprouts that I got at Parkesdale last weekend. I wish Plant City was closer!

Mack had a new after school reading enrichment program starting today, so I had an extra hour before I had to pick him up from school. I don’t know where it went. I need to do one of those time studies because I’m tired of my day disappearing. I’m thinking it’s the internet’s fault. Before picking Mack up I ran by Publix where there was some sort of drama going on in the parking lot.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-20

After Publix I picked up Mack then picked up Cal soon thereafter. The afternoon happened. Where did it go?

Dinner was turkey burgers (bunless for me), sweet potato fries, and broccoli.

We love The Walking Dead and I obsessively read both Part I and Part 2 of the Compendium last week (laziness contributor). Chad ordered some of the special issues.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-22

I read that one last night in about fifteen minutes, but it turns out it was all in the Compendium anyway. Oh well.

Loving these socks that we got for FREE just for checking into the TriRock Expo on Facebook:

Randomness and stream of consciousness aside, what I really want to say in this blog post is that I KNOW I have been a real slacker lately. My muscles are all atrophied and my fitness level is in the can. My pants are all way too tight. Perhaps as a wake-up call I got a nice notification the other day.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-25

Valerie of Busy Mom Gets Fit recently put out the call that she was forming a new network of mom fitness enthusiasts called the #mompowerteam (that’s our Twitter hashtag). I applied and for some reason she picked me. Uh oh. I better get back into fitness, huh? There are about 25 of us. Valerie describes the Power Team as “a group of powerful fitness personalities taking the fit life mainstream.” I’m not sure what being on the team will entail yet (neither is Valerie), but so far it’s been fun to meet some new-to-me fitnessy social media people. It seems like a great group of ladies.

I was planning on going on the family evening walk tonight, but Mack’s not feeling well so I stayed home with him while Chad and Cal are walking. I AM going to Restore the Core tonight.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Mack feels better. He has Astro Skating tomorrow after school (roller skating) and has been really looking forward to it. He’ll be so bummed if he is sick and can’t go to school or to Astro Skate. Cross your fingers too, okay?

Storage, PDQ, Elf at the Straz

November 21, 2012 at 10:10 am

We have very few plans for this week off of school. We need to get the house in order to decorate for Christmas. Mack needs to work on his gifted project. We’re being pretty lazy, sleeping late, taking our time getting up and moving every day.

Yesterday we got motivated to get some things done. We loaded up the car with boxes and headed out. First stop was the Goodwill bin at Mack’s school. The school gets paid per the pound of stuff donated in that bin.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-42

While running errands we listened to Christmas songs on Sirius Radio.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-8

Cal protested that it was too early to listen to Christmas music, but Mack and I out-voted him.

Next stop was storage.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-9

Dropping off:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-11a

That is NOT all of our Star Wars stuff. For some reason the boys love coming to our storage unit.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-12

All of these green bins, plus the stuff on top of them, plus the stuff in the foreground on the left, are all Christmas decorations.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-10

I could only fit less than half of it in the car with the boys with me.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-13

I’ll have to make at least one more trip to get the rest.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-14

After storage we went by PDQ for lunch.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-15

It was about 12:30 and the line was out the door.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-16

While we were waiting in line Steve Erickson, president of PDQ, recognized me from when I met him at the south Tampa PDQ location a while ago and came over to chat with us. I am always impressed to see the restaurant executives there working the room and ensuring that all the customers are having a good experience. Steve is super nice.

Just like every other time I’ve gone to PDQ, the line moved very quickly and our food arrived extremely fast.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-18

The restaurant was packed with the lunch crowd but everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. The restaurant has a very modern, upbeat atmosphere.

I had told the boys that we were not going to get milkshakes yesterday, but then Steve showed up at our table with the new seasonal Mint Oreo milkshake in hand and insisted that we had to try it. We couldn’t say no to the president!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-20

That shake was amazing. You have to get one during the holidays!

For lunch I had the grilled chicken salad. It has almonds and cranberries and a blueberry vinaigrette dressing. Delicious.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-21

After lunch the boys and I ran by Publix, then went home for a while. We only had a couple of hours before we headed out again. We picked up my blogger friend Crystal, she and I dropped the boys off at karate, then Crystal and I headed to Tampa.

The Straz Center was nice enough to provide tickets to Elf the Musical to the Tampa Bay Bloggers, and we were meeting up before the show at Taps.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-29

It was nice see some friends and meet some new-to-me Tampa Bay bloggers.

Taps had a very enticing menu, but I kept being drawn to the Jalapeno & Avocado Quesadilla.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-28

Dinner was delicious and it was fun to hang out and chat. After settling up our checks we all walked over to the Straz Center.

Thanks to Kat for taking that photo.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-33

I was really happy to finally meet Caroline of Morningside Mom in real life last night!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-35

We have been online friends for a while and have lots in common besides sharing a name. She was just as nice as I knew she’d be.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-36

The Straz Center was all decked out for Christmas.

We grabbed some candy and took our seats.

Crystal and me:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-39

Elf the Musical is based on the Christmas movie classic Elf, starring Will Ferrell. The musical is a grand production of catchy holiday songs and fabulous dance numbers, telling the story of Buddy the elf, a human who unwittingly hitched a ride to the North Pole as a baby and was raised by Santa’s elves. As an adult he learns the truth about his birth and embarks on a journey to New York City to connect with his family. Of course hijinks ensue, but in the end Buddy’s sincerity and big heart win over his family, his lady, and the tri-state area, saving Christmas in the process.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-41

I thought that the set, costumes, and dance numbers were amazing. I felt like some of the adult humor from the movie was missing, but the excitement of a live performance also brought new things to the story. The show definitely put me in the holiday spirit!

Elf the Musical is showing at the Straz Center through Sunday, with special Thanksgiving Day engagements. Check out for details. Thanks to the Straz Center for providing me with a gratis ticket to the show. All opinions are my own.

Plans for today include laundry, continued house cleaning in preparation of holiday decorating, working on school projects, preparing a few things for Thanksgiving with friends tomorrow, and getting prepared for the whole family to participate in the Tampa Bay Times Turkey Trot 5K tomorrow morning.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Cya.
