Whole30, Day 4

I had the worst headache when I woke up this morning. Also, I woke up starving.

One of the recommendations (not RULES) for doing a Whole30 is that you should eat within one hour of waking up. I generally have a hard time doing this during the week because I take thyroid medication as soon as I wake up and am not supposed to eat anything for at least 45 minutes. I get up at 5:30 and then Mack and I leave to walk to school at 6:30, which doesn’t leave much of a window for me to eat something. I usually get home around 7:30 and then have breakfast. But this morning I felt famished so I decided to eat half of my breakfast around 6 a.m. I’m hoping thirty minutes is enough time for my medicine to be absorbed.

That definitely put a dent in my hunger, then Chewie and I walked Mack to school.

It may seem strange to have Brussels sprouts for breakfast, but another thing that is highly encouraged on the Whole30 is to stop thinking of certain foods as “breakfast foods” or “lunch foods”. In fact, they don’t use those terms at all. You are supposed to have three meals a day which they refer to as “meal #1”, “meal #2”, and “meal #3”. Maybe I’ll start using those terms as well. You’re also not supposed to have snacks. These are all just more of the “recommendations”.

It is very hard to think of a conventional breakfast that does not include dairy or grains, and I still tend to think of eggs as breakfast food. Many of the veteran Whole30’rs say that your tastes really change once you are no longer fighting the Sugar Demon (say in week three or four of the Whole30), and they claim to crave chicken and vegetables for breakfast. We’ll see. I may get there.

I was definitely feeling a little better after my walk and two breakfasts so I headed to the gym for Bodypump.

Bodypump two days in a row! Booyah! I was sore today, but it felt good to work out the soreness.

Gold’s has two group fitness rooms but they are both smaller than the one big group fitness room at LA Fitness. The instructor (who used to be at LA Fitness) asked the class if there were any members left there since she knew half of us from the old days. The fact is that for Les Mills in northeast St. Pete, Gold’s is the only option. And people love their Les Mills, right Jenny?

One of my friends asked if I was going to stay for the next class, which was Bodystep. I declined because I am super sore and still getting my groove back. She said the instructor is great, though, so I’m sure I’ll be excessercising with back to back classes soon. I’m happy to say that after eating breakfast and working out, my headache was completely gone and I felt really good!.

Once home from the gym I did stuff around the house (NOT including taking down the Christmas decorations dangit) until lunchtime.

What did I do this afternoon? I have slacked on taking pictures except for food and exercise, so it’s hard to remember. I’m kind of focused on this Whole30 thing in case you hadn’t noticed.

I know I picked Mack up from school and made him a snack, because I have a photo of that.

Then we picked up Cal and I dropped the boys off at karate. Chad was picking them up afterwards and I had to go to a PTSA meeting (like PTA, with an “S”) at Cal’s school. I was really happy to learn that Florida is joining 45 other states in adopting the Common Core State Standards. Hallelujah! No more FCAT! It’s about time this country had some nationwide educational standards and that the standards were higher in general.

Thursday night is pizza night, but not for me. I was kind of ticked at Chad for not putting it away so I didn’t have to look at it, but then he told me that he thought I’d want to take a picture of it. Good blogger husband. Bad Whole30 husband. Oh well. I just put it away quickly and made my dinner.

There is one more serving of Carnitas left for me to dump on my lunch salad tomorrow. I’m going to miss it, but I need to eat something other than pork! I need some fish. Next week, more fish.

I didn’t get to have dinner until around 7:30 which is over an hour later than the past few days. I’m happy to say that despite the slightly late dinner I wasn’t starving!

So now the boys are in bed and Chad’s at pool league. I can feel a headache creeping back in. I can’t wait to be past this stage! It hasn’t been that bad. I know it might get worse. Some of the symptoms reported on the website forums by others doing the Whole30 challenge are alarming.

So it has to get worse before it gets better. I guess I’m lucky I’ve only had a slight headache and some hunger so far.

I really like the daily e-mails. Dallas and Melissa Hartwig (authors of It Starts With Food, and the people behind the Whole9 website and creators of the Whole30) are funny and relatable. If you decide to try the Whole30, I would recommend signing up for the e-mails. At the end of each day you get to click on whether you succeeded or slipped up and need to start over. I haven’t clicked on an “uh-oh” link yet, but tonight I was rewarded with this:

Whole30, Day 3

So far so good! Still just a slight headache today. It’s really not bad at all. Today I was very hungry by the time each meal came around. I guess you are supposed to be hungry when it’s time for your next meal. Maybe I’m becoming normal again. I’m still craving caffeine free Diet Cokes. I’m not really “craving” anything else, but I do miss bread and cheese.

This morning Chewie and I walked Mack to school.

It is so warm here. At 6:30 a.m. when we left the house it was 70° thus the shorts and t-shirts. It got up to 83 today! It felt HOT outside. Winter, please come back to Florida.

After I ate breakfast and Cal got off to school I went to the gym for Bodypump!

It was my first time back to Bodypump in a couple of months. I went super light on the weights, but I know that I’m going to be sore tomorrow. It was great. One of the old instructors from Lifestyles taught the class and we had a nice time chatting and reconnecting. About half of the people in the class were people that I used to do Bodypump with at Lifestyles/LA Fitness.

This was actually my first time working out at Gold’s since I joined in December or whenever it was…a while ago. I have been such a slacker, but I’m excited to get back in the groove. I definitely have some thoughts about the gym, but I’ll save it for another post. I am just happy to be exercising again.

Random non-sequitur: I burned my arm while cooking yesterday.

It’s not as bad as it looks.

Bodypump was from 9:15 to 10:15 and I had a meeting at 10:30. And I had to shower before the meeting. So I skipped the ab track and the cool down portions of the Bodypump class, took the fastest shower ever at the gym, then hurried to my Biz Mom Connections meeting which was luckily just across the street from Gold’s

My friend Christie of Bruner Fitness (and Baby Boot Camp and Karna Fitness…she’s busy and super fit) gave the presentation today.

Christie spoke about having SMART goals. I’m sure many of you are familiar with the acronym, but it stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. As always, Christie was very motivational. This is my favorite photo of Christie and me:

I really like BizMoms. If you are an entrepreneur in the Tampa Bay area, you should definitely check it out. There are chapters all over the bay area, and it’s a very supportive and friendly group.

After BizMoms I hurried home to get some things done and have lunch. Lunch was leftovers from dinner the night before:  sirloin steak and Brussels sprouts slaw.

I jazzed up the steak a little with some chimichurri sauce that Chad picked up when we were in Lexington. Luckily it has no forbidden ingredients!

I thought it was pretty good.

Today was early release day so soon after lunch I went to pick Mack up from school. He ended up going over to a friend’s house to play, so I got a bunch of things done before it was time to pick Cal up from the bus stop and retrieve Mack. Despite “getting things done”, most of the Christmas decorations are still up and I still haven’t gone through the stack of mail that the post office held while we were out of town. I hope there is nothing important in there. That’s priority #1 for tomorrow. Or maybe #12, but it’s definitely getting done.

I had to take Cal to karate this afternoon, but luckily Chad picked him up on his way home from work. Also luckily, dinner had been cooking in the crockpot all day and it was amazing. I used a recipe from the Whole9 blog for Crockpot Carnitas.
