Day 1 of my first Whole30

Like I said in my last post, I’m not trying to have the most perfect Whole30 ever. I’m just focusing on the RULES, which are:

There are also all these “suggestions” like no smoothies (don’t drink your food), eat breakfast within one hour of waking, do not eat a few hours before bed, go easy on the bacon (if you can even find any with NO added sugar, which I haven’t been able to yet), etc. But I’m not worrying too much about the “suggestions” right now. I’m just trying to follow the basic rules to the letter.

After I got home from walking Mack to school this morning, I put together my breakfast (this was about two hours after I had woken up…I really don’t see how I can eat breakfast within an hour of waking up on school mornings…I’m not worrying about that right now…stop rambling about this).

(1 piece of homemade breakfast sausage, 2 eggs fried in the pan after the sausage, 1 small tomato, 1/2 avocado, homemade paleo mayonnaise, blueberries, coffee with coconut milk)

Love the homemade breakfast sausage (recipe from Paleo Comfort Foods), but the mayo needs some work. I made it with 100% olive oil (and all I had was EVOO) instead of the half olive oil, half avocado oil that the recipe called for. Also, it’s too lemony. I did manage to find avocado oil today (they had it at both Rollin’ Oats and Fresh Market), so next time I’ll do the half and half thing, or use a lighter (in color) olive oil. I was pleasantly surprised that coffee with coconut milk was totally drinkable. I was really worried about coffee with no sweetener and no dairy, but I thought it was fine.

After breakfast and doing some things around the house (so much laundry to do after vacation…also most of our Christmas decorations are still up, ugh), I went on a ten mile bike ride.

I am seriously out of shape after having been a slug for over a month. It felt good to shake off the cobwebs. After I got home and showered I made lunch.

(salad of romaine lettuce, fresh spinach, bell pepper, roasted butternut squash, avocado, smoked salmon, 1 egg, celery, and Garlic Gold Balsamic vinaigrette)

I had to read the labels on every type of smoked salmon at Whole Foods, and the only one without any added sugar was this one, one of the Whole Foods brands:

It was quite tasty also. I also double-checked to make sure that the salad dressing is Whole30 compliant, and it is.

I actually have a question in to the Garlic Gold people asking exactly what is in their “Organic Italian Seasoning blend”, but in my extensive reading of the Whole9Life website and forums, I found that they generally say “spice blends” and the like are fine unless they specifically include one of the forbidden foods. I know that it is vegan and gluten free, so I think it’s fine. Plus, with only 2g of sugar per serving, it actually has less sugar than the compliant Balsamic vinegar that I have in my cabinet. The Whole30 makes you examine everything.

Like the Timeline post on the Whole9 blog led me to believe would be the case, day one went pretty smoothly. The only thing that I found myself wanting but couldn’t have was soda. My caffeine free Diet Coke consumption has been totally out of control lately. It just goes so well with carbs! Or with any food, for that matter. Several times today I thought, “I really want a Coke!” But instead, I kept this refilled and by my side all day.

For dinner I made another Paleo Comfort Foods recipe, chicken breasts with mushroom sauce.

The only thing non-Whole30 compliant in the recipe was some dry sherry. I left that out and instead subbed about a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to give the sauce some acid. It turned out great! The chicken was amazing.

I also made some roasted broccoli and warmed up some of the roasted butternut squash to go on the side.

Everything was delicious and right now I feel stuffed. I think my portion was too large. But still compliant!

Now the kitchen is closed. Day one is complete if I can manage to make it to bed without eating anything, and based on the way I feel right now, that won’t be hard.

Besides eating paleo food, today consisted of laundry, chauffeuring the boys home from school and to karate, running by a couple of grocery stores looking for avocado oil, and who knows what else. I didn’t take pictures.


Preparing for my Whole 30

So over the weekend I started getting ready for my Whole 30 adventure. By “getting ready”, I mostly mean eating carbs and drinking alcohol. Whoops. I have definitely set myself up for the biggest carb flu ever.

Chewie came home from his luxurious pet resort on Saturday.

We sure did miss him, but I know he had fun at Love My Dog, as evidenced by the daily log and photographs that they sent home with him. He’s smiling in all of the photos, I think.

Saturday night I got together with a bunch of my girlfriends to watch Magic Mike.

I had margaritas and a ton of carbs, including pizza, crab Rangoon, and the carb-alicious sushi that was my contribution to the evening’s goodies.

On Sunday the preparations for the Whole 30 started in earnest. While making breakfast for the boys, I boiled a dozen eggs to use throughout the week.

Having eggs already boiled and peeled makes things so much easier. Cal likes hard-boiled eggs also, so he’ll eat them for breakfasts as well. A dozen eggs fit perfectly into a quart-sized Ziploc.

I decided that I would make a trip to the new Whole Foods in Carrollwood to stock up on approved foods for the week.

Before I left I checked the store’s events calendar and saw that they were having a smoothie tasting while we would be there.

During the “event”, smoothies were BOGO 50%, so I let the boys each get a smoothie as an afternoon snack. Having been converted to green smoothie lovers, they decided to get “Green Dream” smoothies, which have apple and pineapple instead of banana and lemon.

Once we got home I dived into one of my new cookbooks, Paleo Comfort Foods, a gift from my awesome mother-in-law, and made a couple of recipes.

To continue my set up for the week, I roasted some butternut squash and sweet potatoes. When I pierced the butternut squash, it cried.

So after all of that, I was as ready as I was going to be. We spent the evening eating pizza and enjoying the last few hours of our holiday break. Farewell grains, dairy, legumes, and alcohol. Consume you again one day.

After prepping all that sausage I divided it into half-pound portions and froze most of it. I kept out a portion to make for breakfasts this morning.

The boys liked it! I had it for my breakfast also (I’ll be chronically my Whole30 food on the blog, hopefully, so more on that later), and I think it is really good. It has some heat, but that is totally adjustable depending on how much cayenne you add.
