Begging, running, and home repairs

February 27, 2013 at 12:32 pm

First of all I have to hit you up for donations AGAIN. There are only three days left until the Suncoast Classic Run for Kids, and the IRunMommies want to be the top fundraisers for the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) for the third year in a row. If you have healthy children, imagine what it would be like if they had a chronic illness and had to spend days, weeks, or months in the hospital. What if the best hospital for their treatment was hours away from your home? The Ronald McDonald House supports these families in numerous ways. I have seen first hand the gratitude of the families who benefit from RMHC. As moms, this charity really touches the hearts of the IRunMommies. Please consider making a donation…any amount would help!

Next I would like to mention that there are only two days left to get $10 off during early registration for the Pretty Muddy mud run. I’ll be running with team Mud Bloggin’ in the earliest wave. Come get muddy with me in December!

Hmm, what else? I obviously have not been blogging my mundane day to day stuff as I was a little burnt out after my thirty days of continuous blogging during my Whole30 Challenge. But I did go to Bodypump twice last week and relished not taking photos. I also did a five mile bridge run last week with two of my IRunMommies friends, Christie and Michelle.

It was a misty, foggy morning and we were lucky that the rain stopped just before we took off for our run.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-3

You can just barely make out the top of the Sunshine Skyway bridge off in the foggy distance in this photo:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-5

I just did a five mile out and back, but Christie and Michelle did bridge repeats. They were serious.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-6

The path at the Misener Bridge is awesome, and you can get up to 11 miles if you do the entire out and back.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-7

Thanks for the motivation girls…I need some more for this week.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-8

Also last week I got my first delivery of organic fruits and veggies (and eggs!) from Annie’s Organic Buying Club.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-23

I have really missed the CSA that we used to be members of. Last year they quit delivering from the farm in Tampa to the Saturday Morning Market in St. Petersburg, so we had to cancel our membership. When my friend Christine told me about Annie’s I decided to give it a try. Here’s what I got in my first box:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-24

The buying club has all sorts of different options and you can basically customize what you get.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-25

A week later I can say that we pretty much loved it all and have used most of it up already. I signed up for bi-weekly boxes. We still need to eat the collard greens and some of the oranges. I especially loved the spicy micro-greens, crimini mushrooms, and heirloom tomatoes.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-20

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-21

I haven’t been photographing all of my food, but I did take a photo of one breakfast that was made entirely from my Annie’s organic produce:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-22

There are two fried eggs on the bottom of that pile, then sautéed mushrooms, heirloom tomatoes, avocado, spicy micro-greens, and roasted sweet tomatoes…a beautiful, Whole30-compliant breakfast.

Speaking of the Whole30, I have NOT been following the guidelines ever since my awesome girls’ weekend to Folly Beach. I am feeling a strong desire to get back on track, though. My plan is to basically follow most of the Whole30 guidelines, but not look at it as a “challenge”, meaning that if I have an off-track meal I won’t consider anything “ruined”. I really think the best thing for me was eliminating grains. I think that was the biggest factor in maintaining a steady metabolism and reducing inflammation. Of course, I don’t KNOW that eliminating grains was the most important thing, but I just intuitively feel that way. I think eating grains just sets you up on a metabolic roller-coaster all day, whereas sticking to protein, fats, and root-vegetable carbohydrates just keeps everything much more level all day. It just seems logical to me.

So I need to quit talking about it and just do it.

This week I’ve been pretty much house-bound because we have contractors at the house doing a myriad of repairs. On Monday they rebuilt the front of our shed.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-31

Pretty nice, huh? We’re going to have the house painted soon and will have the shed painted to match then.

Inside the house there is a long laundry list of repairs being done, such as replacing the fan in the hall bathroom…

Cutting a new “door” for our attic access because the old one was particle-board that had been dropped and a corner was broken off:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-33

Fixing a bothersome pocket door to our study, which required removing all of the molding to get the thing out:

They have also replaced our doorbell which hasn’t worked in 17 years, put a new light fixture in the laundry closet, and repaired a hole in the drywall in the hall bathroom which was left over from a plumbing repair long ago. Embarrassingly long ago. I had placed a newspaper and a piece of cardboard over the hole behind the toilet as a “temporary” measure. The contractor made fun of me when he pulled out the newspaper and it was dated January 2004. That’s before Mack was born! Oops.

Today they are destroying our master bathroom.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-38

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-39

Yay! We have only been using one bathroom in our “two bathroom” house for a couple of years now. We are the worst procrastinators when it comes to home repairs. When something breaks we just learn to live without it. It will be so nice to have two usable showers again!

Of course all of these repairs are just to get our house ready to put on the market. We are having no luck on the house hunt so far. I have looked at four houses and we liked a couple of them, but before we could even decide whether or not to make an offer they were GONE. I had an appointment to look at one very promising house and it had an offer before I could even look at it. There are very few houses on the market that meet our criteria, and there are NONE in the area where we really want to be. We’re just going to have to be patient until something else comes along. Luckily, we are not in a hurry and still have lots to do to get our current house ready to sell. Still, I’m itching to look at more houses but there isn’t even much to look at!

That’s all I have for today…blogging will likely be sporadic for a while as I’m still not feeling the “every day mundane stuff” writing mojo.

Whole30, Day 30 !!!

February 6, 2013 at 2:46 pm

First of all, for my local friends, please consider getting dinner at PDQ 4th Street tomorrow night and the next two Thursdays after that. Pick up dinner for the kids on Valentine’s Day next week!

The IRunMommies are fundraising on behalf of the Suncoast Classic Run for Kids and the charity is the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). I have added a Suncoast Classic button over there in my sidebar…please click the button to make a direct donation. Even a very small amount would help! IRunMommies members and friends have directly benefited from the good work of the RMHC which helps families of hospitalized children. As moms, this charity is very close to our hearts. We have been the top fundraiser at this event for the past two years and we want a repeat! Please help.

So, back to my mundane life. Yep, this is it. The last day of my Whole30. I plan to do a round up post about the whole thing tomorrow, but there’s one last day of my mundane food and activities to get through first.

Mack talked me out of walking to school this morning because it was too cold (not really). I knew I was going to have a very busy morning today and not walking would give me time to do a few more things to get prepared for the day. I just let him talk me out of it. So after driving him to school I made breakfast.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-1

Then I drove Cal to the bus stop and headed to the gym for Bodypump.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-2

I showered at the gym to save time so that I could make it to my next agenda item, a “Makeover Your Medicine Cabinet” event at my friend Christie’s house.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-3

We learned all about the beneficial properties of essential oils and I am going to write a separate post about that next week after meeting again with my friend Dana, a doTERRA Essential Oils representative. I had to leave early so I missed the end of the presentation, but I am very interested in this product. We each got a small sample of the Wild Orange essential oil and it is amazing.

Wild Orange

It’s supposed to be energizing and I can use all the extra energy I can get!

I had to leave the party early to head to Mack’s school for my volunteer day. First up was Mack’s lunch, of course.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-5

I shared this picture on social media and now Mack is featured on the Chobani Champions Facebook page!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-55

Mack is a superstar, but he needs to work on his photography skills. He took these photos of me hanging stars in Mrs. P’s room:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-56

It’s kind of superfluous after those shots, I guess, but here’s my OOTV (outfit of the volunteering day):

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-8

Hanging stars ended up being the only actual volunteering stuff I had to do, so I was able to get to my next agenda item earlier than expected…the blogger preview party that I posted about earlier today at Healthy Being Wellness Center.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-9

That was a fun, relaxing hour but I had to skedaddle to get on with my busy day. Plus, my stomach was grumbling so I headed home to make lunch.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-10

I used the last bit of my Garlic Gold vinaigrette salad dressings to make some more semi-homemade creamy Italian dressing. I already have more of the vinaigrettes on order!

I also used some of this Trader Joe’s pre-cooked chicken which is awesome. I keep them in the freezer and just pull one out every now and then and stick it in the fridge to use when I need it. So convenient and they are good!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-57

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-58

The rest of the afternoon was spent chauffeuring boys from school and bus stops and making dinner. After seeing my friend Jenny post about this Paleo Pumpkin Chili with Avocado Cream recipe, I decided that I needed to try it.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-12

Publix only had one pound of grassfed beef, so I had to get the Greenwise ground beef for the other pound. I actually made the spice mixture first.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-11

It made a HUGE pot of chili!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-14

I also made the avocado cream (which obviously does not actually have any cream in it).

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-13

I used my mini food processor to make the avocado cream.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-15

The chili and avocado cream came out great!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-16

The boys loved it too which is good because we have lots of leftovers.

The chili was delicious, but it might not have been the best thing to eat right before going out on a run. I met the IRunMommies for a short 2 mile run downtown.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-17

I intended to try to do two miles with no walking, but my body just wasn’t cooperating. I think my stomach was too full of spicy food. I did end up doing some walking, and also stopped to take a couple of photos.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-18

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-19

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-20

Still, I got in two miles so it’s all good. Afterwards was our thirty minute Restore the Core class taught by Christie of Karna Fitness.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-21

So that’s it for Day 30 and for my Whole30! I can’t believe I did it. Stay tuned for a full postmortem. Cya!
