Whole 30, Day 13

Today I slept in a little and then had my coffee and breakfast.

I think every breakfast on the Whole30 is more beautiful than the last. So much prettier than a bowl of cereal.

After breakfast I loaded Cal’s defective bike into the car and took it to the Trek Store of St. Petersburg for a tune-up.

Then I drove a couple of blocks to Above the Barre Fitness for a special blogger introductory class.

I’m going to do a separate post about Above the Barre, but it was challenging and really fun. I was especially thrilled to finally meet Mindy from Mindy’s Fitness Journey in real life!

We have been online friends for quite a while and run in the same circles and it had just gotten ridiculous that we had never met in person. We were kind of excited.

After lunch I picked up Cal’s bike and headed home. I wrote a blog post and did a few things (no idea what) until it was time to get ready to pick up the other Caroline and drive to Sarasota for a Yelp Elite event.

Click here for my full recap of the “Yelp Asks, Who is Jack Dusty?” Elite event, but I will say that I was pretty anxious about going to a fabulous Yelp event while on the Whole30. Amazing food and cocktails are always flowing at these things and I knew it would be a challenge. I did manage to cobble together a few things to keep my stomach from rumbling.

I did slip up accidentally and eat a small (tiny, infinitesimal) bite of sashimi that I didn’t realize had a little soy because the server did not mention it when I asked about the dish. But after I realized it had soy I didn’t touch it again. Yet another tiny mistake in my imperfect Whole30, but I’m not going to let 1/16th teaspoon of soy sauce derail me. So far all of the slip-ups I know of are licking my fingers after serving the boys teriyaki wings, eating one baby corn from a friend’s salad, and the teensy bit of soy sauce at the Yelp event. That’s about as perfect as I can manage.

Stay tuned for more info about this awesome event including photos of all of the food and cocktails that I could NOT eat. Expect sad-faced photos of me, but the other Caroline and I still had lots of fun.

Since she and I were already in Sarasota we decided to drive a few minutes further south and visit Tampa Bay’s only Trader Joe’s after the Yelp event. At 7:30 p.m. on a Saturday night it was not crowded at all.

I had searched the forums on the Whole9Life website for Whole30 approved Trader Joe’s treasures so I had a big list of things I wanted to look for. I came home with quite a haul including a few non-Whole30 items for the rest of the family. I’ll be sure to mention the things I bought as I use them up.

We walked to school this morning, as usual.

I’m proud that we walked to school every single day last week and every day this week so far. I had gotten out of the habit while it was cold before the holidays. It’s been balmy lately, so no excuse there. Getting that 2.3 miles in first thing in the morning just makes the rest of the day go better.

When I got home I made my Whole30 breakfast.

The yellow/orange chunks are roasted butternut squash and the green stuff is spinach, my last leaf of Swiss chard, mushrooms, onions, bell pepper, and one slice of prosciutto cut up into pieces. I think I may love salty prosciutto with my breakfast even better than bacon.

only to discover that I was one hour early for Bodypump. It’s at 9:15 on Wednesdays and 8:15 on Thursdays and Fridays. I just still haven’t gotten the schedule down in my head. It’s on my calendar, but that doesn’t help if I don’t look at my calendar. I only live five minutes from the gym and I contemplated doing an hour of cardio, but instead just went back home to get some things done.

Mainly, I wanted to get a chicken started in the crockpot for the boys’ dinner.

My friend Mila is an awesome cook and she recently started a blog called “Life as a Turtle” (their last name is Turtle…no seriously it is). Last week she published a post called “Quick prep chicken in the crock pot” and it made me really want to try her method. It involves stuffing the chicken with a whole head’s worth of garlic cloves. Yum.

After getting the chicken going and flipping laundry, I headed back to the gym where I am now Yelp royalty.

I went up on weights in a couple of the tracks this week. I’m still not back to where I was before the holidays, but I’m making progress.

I’m still getting used to Gold’s Gym, that’s for sure. It’s not ideal, but I don’t know how much of that is just the fact that it is not what I was used to for so many years at Lifestyles. I had quite the comfort zone at Lifestyle’s until it changed to L.A. Fitness.

I used to belong to Gold’s before I had Cal eleven years ago, and much of the facility has not been updated since then. This group fitness room (they have two) is pretty run down.

I don’t really care about that, though, as long as the instructors and classes are good. Luckily the Wednesday and Thursday Bodypump classes are taught by one of my old instructors from Lifestyles, and she’s great.

After I got home I decided to be productive and tackle a few more Christmas decorations before I showered. No more Christmas tree!

I also took down the annoying clock that played a Christmas carol on every hour. It took thirty seconds to take that clock down and it has been annoying me ever since we got home from Kentucky over ten days ago. Boo for procrastination.

After showering, I made lunch.

After lunch I picked Mack up from school (early release day) and then did laundry, wrote yesterday’s blog post, and who knows what else until time to pick up Cal.

We surprised Cal by heading straight to Yogurtology for their afternoon snack. We haven’t been to Yogurtology in a while, maybe ever since Menchie’s opened up closer to us. But lately Mack has been asking to go back to Yogurtology so today I relented.

But I was fine and it really wasn’t a struggle. Sure, it looked good, and the next time I go I want to try this flavor if they still have it:

After Yogurtology we hung out at home until time to take Cal to karate. I dropped him off and Chad was going to pick him up afterwards, so I went home to finish the boys’ dinner. The chicken came out of the crock pot falling off the bone of course.

I’m saving those yummy mushy garlic cloves to use in other things this week. Of course while I was picking all the meat off the bones I had to taste a few bites and it was delicious. Chad has made a whole chicken in the crock pot before using a different method (breast side up instead of down) and thought that the white meat came out very dry. I thought the meat this time was great, but again he thought it was dry when he tried it. He is convinced that cooking a chicken all day in the crock pot dries out the white meat, but I really thought it was delicious. I think he’s just hard-headed when he gets an idea and won’t let it go. But to each their own.

I served the chicken to the boys with green beans and some whole wheat bread with Smart Balance spread and they loved it. I didn’t have chicken for dinner because I was headed out for a book club meeting with the Tampa Bay Lady Bloggers at Courtside Grille.

We read The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. Well, we sort of read it. Debbie didn’t read it at all, Nanci and I read about a third of it, and supernerd Beth read the whole thing. We still discussed the book and luckily Beth had insights to share. The whole “book club” thing is just an excuse to get together anyway.

Just kidding. Corn is not Whole30 compliant. I actually ate a bite of baby corn before I realized what I was doing. Then I freaked out for a second. Then I realized…who cares??? I’m not starting my Whole30 over for one bite of baby corn.

This was my first real restaurant experience on the Whole30. I’m not counting the sad salad I got at Evos on Sunday. I had scoped out the menu online ahead of time and decided that I could either get the mahi or the tilapia with no butter or oil and ask for double veggies (also no butter or oil) instead of the rice. They did prepare my food as I ordered it, and they did bring me double veggies, but they also brought the rice.

Oh well, no biggie. I was very careful not to eat a grain of rice, especially after the baby corn debacle. But I ate every single bite of tilapia and squash.

When I got home Chad and I watched an episode of Episodes. We still have several on our Tivo from August. We will be into a show and then a show that we LOVE (like The Walking Dead) will come back and the lesser-loved shows just sit there waiting for us to come back to them. Episodes is pretty good, but I think we may be the only people who watch it. It stars Matt LeBlanc as himself. Well, as a fictionalized version of himself, I hope.
