Born to Ride Jam

November 4, 2013 at 3:17 pm

On Saturday, after the Brocante Vintage Market, I met up with my friends Laurel and Lily (of Lily on the Lam) to head to the Born to Ride Jam.

None of us had ever been to England Brothers Park in Pinellas Park, so we drove around until someone directed us to park in their front yard for $15. We complied. Then we hiked next to a canal to a back gate for the event.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-5

Here we are waiting to get frisked:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-4

Then we felt like we were cheated because we didn’t get frisked. But they inspected our bags and let us in.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-7

We entered the park right behind the main stage, where Foghat and Joan Jett would be playing, among others.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-17

I had heard that this event gets packed, but it had been raining all day up until we got there around 2:00, so the crowds were just starting to form.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-9

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-26

We made our way through all the tattooed people clad in Molly Hatchet shirts and headed towards the vendor area. Of course we got sidetracked by this photo op:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-234

I was in the vicinity of Katey Sagal! The three of us were there because we are such big Sons of Anarchy fans. The vendors at a biker jam are awesome!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-13

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-11

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-12

I may have come home with a black leather bejeweled and studded belt.

The rains had caused the midway to become sort of a mud pit.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-14

Here’s the celebrity general admission meet and greet stage, where I would soon (relatively) be meeting Katey Sagal and beginning our lifelong friendship:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-15

I should have taken more photos of all the awesome vendors’ wares, but I got scared off by one leather-clad lady who admonished me not to take photos of the original artwork (in her case it was a motorcycle wind chime). OK.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-16

There were many bike shops there and they were happy for you to take photos of their beautiful motorcycles on display.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-21

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-22

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-23

They know how to throw a party in Pinellas Park, and had full liquor in addition to wine and beer.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-24

They even had club soda, so I could have a NorCal margarita sans lime, otherwise known as tequila and club soda.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-27

Laurel and Lily grabbed a piece of pizza from the row of deep fried goodness…

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-25

and we got in line for the GA celebrity meet and greet. It was around 2:40 and the meet and greet was supposed to start at 3:00. We were maybe 30 or 40 people back in the line which continued to form behind us immediately. While we stood there eating and drinking we entertained ourselves by people watching.

I pretended to take a photo of this motorcycle…

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-28

while actually taking a photo of this chain-linked couple:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-29

At first we thought he had her on a leash, then we couldn’t decide who actually had who on a leash. Sweet.

3:00 p.m. came and went and we were still standing in line. No biggie. Celebrities are always late. We got to know the people in line around us.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-30

Best mustache of the day (and there were many):

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-31

We were also highly entertained by this Zack Galifianakis look-alike. He was somehow with the band that had performed on the small stage earlier and for a while was sitting under their merch tent in a chair sound asleep with hundreds of people all round him. He would get up every now and then and stumble around a little.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-34

By 4:00 p.m. or so we were getting tired of standing in line, so we sat.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-32

5:00 came and went and we were getting worried about whether we were actually going to get to look into Theo Rossi’s eyes or not.

Finally, a little before 6:00 p.m. there was a commotion, and we knew that the celebrities had arrived.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-33

It was still a while before the line actually started moving, so Laurel and I walked over to the front of the stage where all the sad people without meet and greet tickets were ogling the celebs.

There was Katey…behind that metal barricade!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-35

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-36

Ahhh, we were excited now. What is it about getting physically close to a celebrity that you admire? It’s just such a rush.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-37

We got back in line as it was slowly inching towards the stage.

It was sprinkling off and on all afternoon while we waited in line. The sun would come out and it would be hot, then it would go behind a cloud and we’d get chilly, then it would rain a little. We all came prepared.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-38

Others were jealous of our umbrellas.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-39

Almost there…on the ramp!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-40

Look at these sad people with no M&G ticket:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-41

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-42

So close!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-43

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-44

Here’s Lily getting ready to chat up Theo Rossi:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-45

And Laurel asking Katey how she liked the Florida weather:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-46

And Theo asking Lily what we were doing after this:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-48

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-49

Kim Coates actually had a conversation with me! He said, “I’m sorry that we can’t spend more time with each fan.” I was totally tongue-tied and mumbled, “I don’t see how you do it.” He replied, “Neither do we.” They were all so nice and genuinely made a point of looking at each fan and speaking with them.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-1

I was totally star-struck. Gemma is my idol. You can tell from the following photos that she really bonded with me also:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-2

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-50

We were pretty miserable and grumpy after standing in line for over three hours, but as we walked down the ramp off the stage all three of us were totally happy. We had a great fan experience. The meet & greet tickets were an extra $20 and we all felt like we had gotten our money’s worth. We had to stop for more cardboard cut-out photos on our way out.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-51

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-53

We met so many interesting, nice people at the biker jam.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-52

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-54

It was around 6:30 and we were all tired and satisfied so we decided we didn’t want to hang around until after 7 to hear Joan Jett. However, the field had really filled in since when we had arrived earlier.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-55

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-56

Thanks for inviting me to go with you guys Laurel! It was a really fun day, despite the rain and the standing in line. Let’s do it again some time!

Mid-week catch up and Sawgrass Lake

October 23, 2013 at 5:34 pm

Monday we walked to school, but I didn’t take a photo. It looked like this:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-56

Later I went back to school to volunteer. Here’s my OOTVD (outfit of the volunteering day):

At school I cut paper…

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-4

put together homework packages…

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-5

and hung out with Mack while he had lunch.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-6

I can’t remember what else happened on Monday, but the next pictures I have are from Monday night when we watched The Walking Dead and I made a cocktail.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-57

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-1

That is the dregs of a NorCal margarita: tequila, club soda, lime. It’s really good, low carb, and I think it’s my new favorite drink.

I took these photos some time on Monday because Chewie looked so sweet in his spot of sunshine.

On Tuesday I drove Mack to school because we were going on a fieldtrip that started early in the day. OOTFD (outfit of the fieldtrip day):

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-37

I love this top from Gwynnie Bee. It’s these same flowers that grow in our neighbor’s backyard and spill over into ours…like these that I took photos of at Sunken Gardens on Sunday:

The top is totally sheer, so it was the perfect thing to wear on a fieldtrip to a county park and environmental center on a 90 degree day with 90% humidity. Fall had not arrived here yet as of yesterday.

On the school bus:

At Sawgrass Lake County Park:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-15

I have been to many (many, many) fieldtrips to this park, as well as many playdates there when the boys were little, but it is a gem.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-16

The kids first had to take a pre-test…

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-18

then they learned about all of the data we were going to be collecting that day. The kids had to break up into teams to test the nearby canal’s pH, turbidity, and oxygen levels, as well as air temperature and a couple of other things I’m sure I’m forgetting.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-19

They also had to record observations found in the environment and use fields guides to identify plants and animals that they saw.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-20

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-21

I got teamed up with Mack and his friend to test the canal water’s pH with a testing pen.

The kids really got into the data collection. They were loving it.

After the data was all collected, recorded, and discussed we went on a short hike around the park.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-33

Our teacher/guide for the day was fabulous. Here she has the kids demonstrating weathering, erosion, and deposition.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-55

Some of our observations…

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-35This is a juvenile alligator. You can tell that he/she is still a baby because they lose those yellow stripes between 2-3 years old.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-41American Beauty berries.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-43Apple snail shell. These are invasive to Florida and get their name because they are the size of an apple, or fist-sized. This one was empty, but these huge things are everywhere out there. People use them in aquariums so that’s how they ended up in our local waterways.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-40Fieldtrip shoes. The kids love them, so don’t judge.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-42

Our teacher/guide asked the kids how many stripes they thought are on the back of a six-lined racer, a type of lizard. It was disheartening to hear many of them yell out, “Three!” Luckily, most of them answered, “What do you think a rat snake eats?” correctly. Maybe there is hope for the future.

Once we got back into the classroom the kids took a “post” test (and improved their scores tremendously, as our guide gave them all of the answers throughout the day) and got to check out all of the animals and other interesting things on display.

Grady the rabbit roams freely in and out of the classroom. They just leave all the doors open, even the ones leading to the outdoors. He’s obviously pretty happy there.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-17

Mack got to hold a snake.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-36

I learned that the term “aquatard” is not an insensitive name for me during the first leg of a triathlon. It’s actually part of the water cycle in Florida.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-30

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-31

The fieldtrip was great, but it was also LONG. It took up the entire school day.

Last night my friend Amy invited me to come hang out with her out at the beach. We were going to get drinks and watch the sunset but then it was raining. So instead we went to a place in Treasure Island called Middle Grounds Grill for dinner. I didn’t photograph my food, but the seasonal salad and New York strip steak with veggies were excellent. I would definitely recommend this place!

I did photograph my drink. I was going to order a NorCal margarita, but then I saw this on the menu which was just sort of a fancier version of that.

MiddleGrounds drink

We both got one without the agave nectar, and it was delicious. I definitely want to recreate this drink on my own some time. Thanks for the invitation Amy!

Luckily last night’s rain brought a cold front, and it was so nice out this morning on our walk to school. It was still shorts and tank top weather for me, but the humidity had noticeably dropped and I didn’t break a sweat. This is Mack chastising Chewie for filling FOUR poop bags on our walk:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-44

He missed his evening walk last night because of the rain and he pretty much refuses to poop in our yard unless it’s a dire emergency. He is spoiled by his morning and evening walks.

Today I stayed home all morning doing laundry and catching up on some things. The afternoon has been the usual run-around of picking up boys at various places and taking them to other various places. Time to go make dinner.
