Mid November catch up

November 18, 2013 at 3:35 pm

I pretty much let Yelp take over my blog for a while there, but regular life was also happening in between all of those fabulous events. I was dumping all of those non-Yelping photos into a file as the days went by and this morning there were over 250 photos in there. Here are some of them (stuff that happened in the last two weeks):

Lots of walking to school.

Mack is such a trooper for posing for these silly pictures on our walk every morning.

Lots of other school stuff happened, like volunteering the past two Mondays and today.

Cal’s school had a mandatory PTSA meeting (like PTA with an S, and they are all mandatory) one night…

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-67

and it was also a spaghetti dinner.

Mack participated in a multi-school gifted competition called the Creativity Olympics, held at Perkins Elementary.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-224

His team didn’t score in the top three, but he talked about it for hours afterwards and kept saying how much fun it was.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-225

He got the coveted “Participant” ribbon.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-238

Mack got to see a bunch of his friends from his old elementary school, and I did too.

The kids had school on Veteran’s Day and the car line was lined with flags.

Very nice.

Gearing up for The Urban Bike Adventure with Team Wonder Wheels in downtown St. Pete this weekend (yikes):

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-132

Ugh. Ok. Enough with the horrid selfies. What else?

I noticed on my various shopping trips the past couple of weeks that it is obviously full-on holiday time. I love it.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-79

I don’t love this so much:

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-129

Why?

I was excited to stop by a new to me fish store a week or so ago.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-201

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-202

There were about a dozen people loitering around outside both of the entrances, but sadly, despite the next photo, they were not open.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-203

Some lady was pretty upset because she was supposed to pick up her crab. I hope she got it.

I went back to the doctor.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-78

More on that in another post most likely.

Chewie, the boys, and I went to Largo Central Park one Sunday.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-191

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-192

They have the Christmas lights up! We love coming here to see all the lights during the holidays.

I have been missing my friends at the Trek Store since I haven’t ridden my bike very much in the past six months. But next weekend is The Urban Bike Adventure (yikes again), so I took this opportunity to take Star the Trek in for a tune up.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-138

They had some good food…

giveaways…

and a speaker from Trek Women as well as a lady who spoke to us about commuting by bike.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-144

I was happy to see my friends Meghan and Tori there!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-145

You can barely tell in the photo above, but I wore my shirt from the Southeastern Guide Dogs Walkathon last March because Southeastern Guide Dogs was also there and gave us a great presentation.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-146

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-150

Duke pretty much stole the show.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-147

I won a giveaway!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-148

A set of tire levers…thanks Trek Store of St. Pete!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-149

Thank you to Anne and her team for another fun event!

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-151

And thanks for the tune-up for Star…

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-171

and her new sticker which was hard to photograph.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-172

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-173

On Saturday we went out to the beach to have some family Christmas card portraits made.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-239

And Sunday we rested.

My Fascinating Life Caroline Calcote-240

Or at least some of us did.

So now I’m a little more caught up, but that was not 250 photos, so more to come.

Trek Women Street Cycling Clinic

November 4, 2012 at 6:14 pm

I have said it before, but it bears repeating…I have the best husband ever. I’m sorry that your husband doesn’t quite measure up to my husband’s awesomeness, but it’s true. Thursday night is his long-standing pool (billiards) league night so I usually try not to schedule events on that night, but occasionally something comes up on a Thursday night that I really want to do. That was the case this past week.

A few weeks ago I received this invitation in the mail:

TrekWomen-1-2

TrekWomen-2-2

Chad agreed to let me drop the boys off with him at work before 5:00 so that I could make it in time, and he also had to attend a PTA meeting without me. Husband/Father of the year! After some hectic logistics fighting late afternoon traffic shuttling the boys around, I made to the Trek Bicycle Store of St. Petersburg right at 5:30 p.m.

TrekWomen-1

My friend Anne, one of the owners, was out front helping to get things set up for the event.

TrekWomen-2

Look at these beautiful bikes we were going to get to demo!

TrekWomen-3

TrekWomen-18

Somehow I forgot to bring my cycling shoes, but luckily the lovely April (who makes me look like an Amazon, yet again)…

TrekWomen-20

let me borrow her extra pair. She may be tiny, but luckily she has big feet.

TrekWomen-19

The brand new Trek Madone 6 Series was to be my ride for the evening. Hello beautiful $4,600 bike. Come to mama.

TrekWomen-21

You can read about all the specs for this bike on the Trek website here, but this bike is nice, obviously.

TrekWomen-26

TrekWomen-27

Some of the other riders got to try out the new Trek Domane 6 Series which has a great shock-absorption system to help smooth out rough terrain, like European cobblestones, or the brick pavers in the St. Pete Old Northeast neighborhood (foreshadowing).

We met Mel, a Trek Women Product Specialist, and she helped get my bike all set up for me.

TrekWomen-23

I invited my Ironman friend Tori to join me at this event and it was great to have her there. We’re pretty tight now after our 5 hour 50-miler last weekend. She also rode one of the Madones.

TrekWomen-24

Mel gave a short clinic on group street cycling, taking us through all the hand signals and etiquette that help make a group ride safer and more pleasurable on the roads. She also explained that most of our bikes had tubeless wheels, which will auto-seal when punctured and can then just be re-inflated if necessary. Wow. I didn’t even know there was such a thing.

TrekWomen-25

Then we were off. I could immediately tell a difference between this carbon-framed work of art and my lower-end (but hey, still sweet) Specialized Allez. It felt super light and responsive until we had ridden a couple of miles. Once I became adjusted to the different feel of the bike it just felt normal and comfortable. Don’t worry though, I still love Snowflake. But a girl can dream of grandeur, right?

TrekWomen-28

Anne led us through the neighborhoods of northeast St. Petersburg as the sun was setting. Bridge #1, actually entering my neighborhood:

Bridge #2, entering Snell Isle:

Bridge #3, over Coffee Pot Bayou:

TrekWomen-32

TrekWomen-33

Once Coffee Pot Boulevard turned into brick pavers, those riding the Domanes got to really check out that shock-absorbing feature. I wussed out and jumped up onto the bike path for a smoother ride along the water.

TrekWomen-34

We had a fun ride and luckily I did not crash an expensive bike that didn’t belong to me. According to mapmyrun.com we rode about 9.5 miles. We were out for about an hour, I think.

After I reluctantly turned my bike back over to Mel, we all went inside for some food and fun.

TrekWomen-5

TrekWomen-8

Anne made these delicious roll-ups which are a pickle, ham, and cream cheese mixed with taco seasoning. It sounds strange, but they were so good!

TrekWomen-9

She also made this layered Mexican dip which was delicious:

TrekWomen-10

They also had beer and wine…

TrekWomen-7

TrekWomen-6

but I stuck to water. They sadly didn’t have margaritas.

Mel handed out goodie bags to all the participants, and here she is saying, “What’s up with all the photographs?”

TrekWomen-11

In the bags:

TrekWomen-16

They also had a bunch of prizes displayed to be handed out through a random drawing.

TrekWomen-4

My good luck held and I won a sweet jersey! Tori won a helmet.

TrekWomen-14

Given my Amazonian stature, I was concerned that the jersey wouldn’t fit, but then I learned that I get to order one in the size of my choice!

TrekWomen-35

Thank you Canari Cyclewear and Trek Store of St. Pete! The certificate says ABC’s Ladies Appreciation Night because Anne and her husband Rick also own ABC Bicycles in St. Pete and Canari made a small error there.

They ended up having more prizes than participants, so they put all the names back in and drew again. This time I won a helmet!

TrekWomen-15

It was a fabulous evening and I made it home in time for Chad to make it to pool and even play.

Thank you Trek Women and the Trek Bicycle Store of St. Petersburg! You are awesome!
